Embracing a Non-Linear Career Path

By:

In our recent virtual event, our panelists, Danielle Stefanello (AlphaSense), Aaron Pugh (ComplyAdvantage), and Katie Capuzzo (WISE) shared tips for embracing a non-linear career path. Watch the recording here.

Here’s what we learned:

Seek experiences over titles.

When evaluating new opportunities, it's important to have a solid understanding of both short and long-term career goals. Get specific! For example: "I want to work internationally" or "I want to shape a board deck." By doing this, it's easier to determine if the opportunity aligns with your goals or distracts you from them.

Own your personal brand.

You can build your brand by default or by design. Take an active role in shaping your narrative and get comfortable with feedback. If you struggle to give constructive feedback, try Danielle's framework: BEEP - behavior, effect, expectation and positive suggestion.

Connect the dots.

If you're exploring a role that you haven't technically done before, think about the attributes of the employee who has. What experiences/characteristics would they highlight? Ex: handling rejection, managing a project, etc. Think of it as ability vs. capability - ability: I've done it, capability: I am capable of doing it and will invest in learning.
